Seeking Clear, Full Explanation of Proof-of-Stake and DPOR

The website descriptions left me confused. Do gridcoins have to be staked before they can be owned by a user (account)?

Or are there two ways of paying a user who has mined gridcoin: Boinc verification and proof-of-stake? If so, is the first way, verified Boinc work, a temporary stand-in until the gridcoins can be staked?

What exactly is staking and how does it relate to the gridcoin blockchain? It sounds like it is adding new transactions to the gridcoin blockchain.
