Does VW 502.00 oil really Matter

My 2013 Jetta 2.0 SOHC gas engine needs an oil change. Right now Mobil 1 is on sale but I don't think Mobil 1 extended performance is approved under VW 502.00 oil specs. My question is, does VW 502.00 approved oil really matter? As long as I put 5W-40 oil in the engine will the engine be fine? Thank you!
