What are secondaries really like?

So I already submitted my primary app, and now I'm looking to prewrite secondaries. I looked up most of the secondary essays on prospective doctor, and I'm going to start those, but my question is... what really are secondaries? A lot of these schools I looked up have small essays, or no essays at all. So what else does secondaries entail?
