Learning Reinhardt

I'm new(lvl 40) and only QP. My favs are 76 and mercy but I just fell in love with Reinhardt. After seeing some videos I noticed that I have to land a lot of pins and charge in like a berserker to initiate fights. Sometimes I do it well, sometimes I dont, I just try to not be that guy that only right clicks, so, my question:

1)I normally que medals(gold) in objective kills, and objective time, am I failing if I don't get medals on damage/normal eliminations?

2. Imo I only perform very well when we are death ball vs deathball, cause I initiate, kill a guy and suddenly it's 5v6, when my team is not on the payload/objective o very segregated I feel I'm just a shield holder. Is this normal?
