76TB (soon 108) managed individually - help me get a handle on this insanity!

Question?

#Background

Been building PCs for 15 years, but NEVER ventured into the server/HTPC area. So please try not to laugh… :( I seriously need help, have looked through the Wikis, but don’t even know where to start to get this project done – which is why I’m making this long post (or cry for help!)

My last “Gaming PC” was built in 2008 starting with 2x2 WD Blacks, and since then has been upgraded to the specs below, with drives continually being added to it over time to its current state. Essentially, this has transformed my current Gaming PC into a Gaming PC/file server.

I have NO experience in Linux or writing scripts to do stuff. I manage everything within exclusively within Windows 10.

##Current Specs of My Gaming PC/File Server (in bedroom)

  • Fractal Design DEFINE XL Case (Original – not R2)
  • Core i7 4790k (Bought Nov 2015)
  • 16GB of DDR3 (Bought Nov 2015)
  • MSI z97 Gaming5 Mobo (Bought Nov 2015)
  • Corsair 1200W PSU (Bought Early 2013 because I ran out of power connectors on 600w psu)
  • XFX R9 280 GPU (Bought July 2014 - waiting to upgrade this to Vega or RX580 soon)
  • 1x LSI 9211-8i in IT mode to connect 8 SATA drives internally (bought Dec 2016)
  • 1x PCIe x1 card that lets me connect my 4in1 “dumb” Mediasonic enclosure via eSata (bought Dec 2008). This doesn’t let me monitor SMART status/info on four drives simultaneously.
  • R7000 Router
  • 500Mbps download speed, but 30Mbps upload

##Current Situation (Help me manage my needs better)

  • My main PC is still used to game, I only have this one PC, so this is where I manage my downloads and bandwidth manually.
  • So while gaming, I need continue to have the ability to quickly throttle (or pause) my downloads so my gaming ping isn’t affected.
  • All my hard drives are encrypted with individual full disk encryption.
  • I do not use any RAID setups, or drive pools. All disks are managed individually. I’ve managed this with ~80TB of drives/data.
  • I also stream the content on these drives via the Windows Plex Server that I run on the same PC to 3 users within the LAN network, and to 2 family members outside the lan. (My 4790k has no problem transcoding 4-5 streams simultaneously).
  • I backup some (not all) of my stuff 100% manually every 1-2 months across 4 Drives (3x 8TB + 1x5TB).
  • I do NOT want to run my PC 24/7 – My room gets too hot I want it to Hibernate/Sleep when not in use.
  • I also want a way to somehow wake up my PC/Server from Hibernating mode if someone wants to use Plex, currently that is not an option. This is just the gravy on top.

Looking into some way I can manage all this insanity a bit better… In obviously the most cost efficient manner, while keeping future upgrade paths available. In the past, I just sold off my smaller drives at a loss to make room for slots for bigger… I guess this is still an option, but I know you guys will recommend something better.

###Current Drives:

  • 1x 120GB Intel 520 SSD (Main OS Drive)
  • 1x 500GB Samsung Enterprise SSD (Gaming Drive)
  • 1x Internal DVD-RW Drive
  • 3x 8TB Seagate Archive v2 HDDs (24TB)
  • 2x 5TB WD Caviar Black 7200rpm (10TB)
  • 2x 4TB HGST Deskstar 7200RPM (8TB)
  • 3x 4TB Seagate Barracuda (ST4000DM000) 7200RPM (12TB)
  • 2x 3TB Seagate Barracuda (ST3000DM001) 7200RPM (6TB)
  • 2x 3TB Enterprise Seagate Constellation (ST33000650NS) Drive 7200RPM (6TB)
  • 2x 2TB Enterprise WD RE4 (Gold) 7200RPM (4TB)
  • 3x 2TB WD Black 7200RPM each in their own separate 3.5” custom USB/eSata enclosures (6TB)
  • Total: 76TB Current

###Other/MISC:

  • 4x 8TB WD NAS Red (Not Pro) 5400RPM (32TB) – PENDING SALE from local guy.
  • Guy also selling Synology DS414 for $150, but googling the specs tells me it’s pretty damn weak – Dual 1.33GHZ? 1GB Ram? Max Internal Capacity: 16TB?? Not even sure how I’d incorporate this into my setup? This is trash right?

If I get this, this cranks my total to 108TB!

Got the following too:

  • x58 Gigabyte ex58-ud5 sitting gathering dust (can I repurpose this somehow?)
  • Intel Core i7 920 gathering dust too (useless? Worth buying some socket 1366 XEON with above mobo?)
  • 6x 2GB DDR3 Ram (12 GB of Triple Channel)

Can I do ANYTHING or repurpose these 3 things effectively? (All from 2008) Or should I just sell them? Got a few offers of $120 for all 3, which seems very low to me… but almost a decade old, so… yeah.

Thanks so much in advance for any help, insight, tips you can provide in helping me get a better handle on this insanity. Thanks!!!

TL;DR: Help me manage my 76TB-108TB better please.
