Newbie questions - how to find a good place (LGBT friendly, as well)

I'm a noob but as you can see by this throwaway I've done some homework.

Is there anything to finding a place beyond google fu, making sure I read any online reviews, and of course touring the place/speaking to the teachers? Any tricks/red flags on things that should make me avoid a place like the plague?

Also as indicated by the title I'm looking for a place that's LGBT friendly. I'm transgender (male to female) and I'm not looking to compete in any tournaments or anything like that. I just want to learn. I'm what's known in the trans community as stealth. I moved to a new state after transition, left my past completely behind, no one at my work or any of my neighbors know I'm trans. Or if they do, no one has ever said a word about it. So that's another motivation for not wanting to compete as I don't want to make a spectacle and end up being outed.

Having said that, I still don't want to make anyone uncomfortable. It's one thing when you don't tell anyone your past and you work with them. It's another when, well, you're on a mat with them. Should I have to worry about anyone, well, inadvertently feeling what's I've got between my legs? Should I warn whatever place I go to about this?
