What's your preferred way to tackle new genres/styles?

The question here is simple, but the answers can get a bit complicated. As someone who struggles with this: How do you go about learning a new genre? Let's say, if you have a comission for a space-themed piece. Do you spend some time listening to famous space-theme tracks? Do you search every corner of the web for soundbooks which contain space-themed tracks and study them more attentively? Or do you do something else entirely?
