Is it possible to create a LAN between two laptops without a router?

A friend and I are going to be flying together (10+ hours) and we'd really love to be able to play a local multiplayer game on the plane. My laptop has an ethernet port but his only has USB ports. Would it be possible for our two laptops to create a LAN without a router?
