Need help - Most confusing dating situation in my life

As a 21 year-old-male, I have never been more confused in my dating life. I would be eternally grateful if anybody could try to interpret my dating situation. Here goes:

A few months ago, I (21M) ran into a girl I recognized (21F) at a college dance. We hit it off and spent most of the night together, holding hands and talking. I asked her to lunch that next week and we sat and talked for 2.5 hours. She later admitted to me that she was "smitten" after that lunch and that her roommates noticed how smiley she was. Her roommates asked one of my close friends about me and my friend told me that her roommates told him how excited she was after that first lunch.

We continued to grab lunch/ coffee on campus a few times a week and go on actual dates (restaurants, bowling, etc.) We would spend hours together and each meet-up was better than the last--we both agreed that it was super easy to talk to each other and that we had a blast together.

There were many positive signs. She would often reach out and ask to hang out. We coincidentally went to the same place for spring break together and all of her friends told me that she was super into me. Additionally, about a month into dating, she brought up the idea of being in an exclusive relationship several times, which we both agreed to be in, agreeing that we weren't interested in being with anybody else. She also told one of my friends at a bar that she had liked me for a while. We were also hooking up periodically.

There were also negative signs. She would often initiate the prospect of hanging out ("we should hang out this weekend!" or "we should hang tonight!") and then sometimes flake out to stay in or go out with her girlfriends when I followed up. But sometimes, she wouldn't flake and would come over or invite me over. I tried to back off so it was her doing most of the initiating. This problem was exacerbated by her being a bad texter and by not always being open with her feelings.

We had been dating for a few months, but I grew frustrated with being in an exclusive relationship with somebody and getting flaked on. I had talked to her about it before (it made her upset and she cried for a while), but she did not change her behavior so I ultimately broke things off.

When I broke things off, she switched gears. Rather than attributing the tensions in our relationship to flakiness, she said that she believed good relationships began from good friendships and that she was trying to get to know me as a friend first and testing the waters romantically (sounds like BS, but she also was not a promiscuous girl, had only been in one serious relationship, and barely ever had random hook-ups). Yet, this conflicted with her suggesting being in an exclusive relationship.

When I broke things off, I told her that I wanted to cut communications entirely. She took it hard. She drunk texted me a week later saying, "I know I'm not supposed to talk to you, but I keep seeing you everywhere."

After a month or so, I felt good enough to reach out, so I did. We grabbed dinner and she said she had feelings for me but that she thought mine were stronger at the time. I asked her what she wanted and she said she wanted to be friends. I said no. She took it hard. I said that after we graduated, we probably wouldn't see each other again, so I wished her luck in life. She said that that was a bit dramatic and that she believed in fate. A few weeks later, she sent me a Facebook friend request (I deleted her when I broke things off).

If you made it this far, props. Please help me: what in the absolute fuck did I experience?
