Why softball?

Honest question! Lately I've noticed a lot more college softball on ESPN and it got me thinking.

I don't really understand why women can't play baseball too? Women play pretty much every other sport BUT baseball. Instead they play softball. I understand that men are simply bigger and stronger than women and that might warrant a smaller field. But the ball size and the different pitch??

I did a bit of googling and couldn't find an answer I was satisfied with. So I'm hoping y'all can help me out!!!
