BoM Evidence of people already at America?

Is there any textual evidence of Title? Besides the Jaredites and Mulekites, I'm not aware of a single reference to people already living in the Promised Land. But the BoM essay says it's reasonable there were.

Any Joseph Smith statements for or against that argument?
