Don't know how to explain ex husbands hygiene habits to our daughter

My daughter is five and in Jr kindergarten and one of the things she's learning about is hygiene. We talk about washing stinky parts and she's pretty good about hygiene for a five year old.She's asked repeatedly why her dad smells. She's asked him why he smells. When we were together I tried to help remind him. There is never an answer.We've talked about why we bathe, to be clean healthy and to be nice to be around. But I don't really have an answer for her about her dad. She's embarrassed and I've told him that but still no change. He has very few visits with her (his choice) so I don't want this to end the visits but she's starting to not want to be around him.Not sure what to do.
