(5E Unearthed Arcana) Musing About the Mystic

5th Edition

I've been thinking a lot about the mystic lately- specifically about it's balance. Definitely it is not without geninue balance problems, some of them quite serious, but there seem to be a few talking points that keep coming up 'proving' that is unbalanced based on subtle misconceptions about the rules or how those rules play out.

The problem is that the mystic creates these misconceptions by being so damn complex. Sometimes the subtle aspects of the balancing are not apparent till the till one has made several readthroughs. It's like someone has made an entirely new spell casting system just as complex as the old one- which I guess they have.

For me this prompts an aesthetic or philosophical question- how much work is it reasonable to expect of the D&D community to 'learn' the mystic concept. If I've got a wonderful new class concept but it takes up 28 pages is that 'fair' on the community given the amount of unpaid labour it takes to process that? Wasn't 5E mean to avoid this sort of thing?

Now personally I love the mystic, I think it's a lot of fun, but what consolation is that for the DM who has to read the whole damn thing several times just so I can play it? But, I hear myself thinking IT'S JUST SO COOL! What is there to say about a debate like this where both sides seem to have legitimate points?

As a sidenote I really think someone needs to make a mystic FAQ and address common misconceptions in it, because the same misconceptions do seem to keep cropping up. Has anyone seen such an FAQ?
