How to spend/convert Ether?

Sorry for having to ask this question, I'm pretty sure it's answered somewhere else but I'm not sure how you can spend your Ether. I was thinking about using my gtx 1070 to start mining Ethereum, so is there any way I could convert it and eventually make a profit in USD? Thanks!
