left or right position?

I just started learning to play the electric guitar (a month or so) by myself(internet). I strum with the right hand with the guitar resting on the left leg without a footrest. I just found out that the proper way to play the guitar is on the right leg but when I tried I feel all uncoordinated and the strumming hand is a lot less accurate. Is it worth it to try to change and get used to play on the right leg? (considering that I'm still a newbie and changing now will be less traumatic then later on)
