How to make a simple AUR application?

I'd like to make a simple tray icon which shows whether arch needs updates in KDE.

The idea is to learn how to make a simple application/plug in which I can put up on the AUR.

I'm a programmer by trade, and would just like to know the basic workflow.

What IDE should I use? Which programming language? QT or gtk?
