Advice/Suggestions for a First Bike

I've been riding Citibike since the start of the year and want to move on to my own bike. I live in in NYC and am looking to get an entry-level road bike and I'm not very sure where to start looking.

I should mention that I'm about 6'3, so I'll need an xl or xxl frame

Your level of experience with cycling

Little - I have been riding Citibike for under a year and I don't know too much about bikes. I've been having some difficulty learning what may be good or not

What's your price range, and have you considered second hand?

About $300-400, and secondhand is fine considering the price range. I may consider a little more, but I'll pay the big bucks when I graduate.

What's your intention with the bike - commuting, fitness, touring, sport, etc?

Commuting, and likely longer rides around the city during weekends. I just like riding for fun and riding fast, really. I think I'd really enjoy some community rides and eventually some of the bigger events you could find at bike.nyc

How far will you be riding, and how often?

During the weekday, around 2 miles each way for my commute to work. On the weekend, around 15 ideally (going from Brooklyn-MetroTech to Central Park or so). Let's say about 30-40 miles per week

Riding conditions: roads, pavement, trails, single-track, off-road? Flat or hilly? Traffic and weather.

Mostly roads. There will rarely be pavement. Nothing off-road or anything. The weather is just about unpredictable but it gets hot. I likely won't bike in heavy rain. Traffic is fine for my commute to work, but it can get busy elsewhere

Your location (even approximate) can help other locals familiar with your conditions, too.

NYC - I live in Brooklyn, near NYU-Tandon where I go to school
