Boyfriend [22m] and I [21f] renting first home and I feel overwhelmed.

Relationships

I really hope I don't sound ungrateful/spoiled during this post, but i need to weigh our options and figure out what is best.

My boyfriend [22m] and I [21f] moved I moved into our first home together after being in a relationship for almost 8 years.

My boyfriend just graduated and got a good gig as a program developer for a large company. I am a graphic designer for a sign business, graduating next May. We both make more than enough to live comfortably, but wanted to save money, (travel, future home) so we decided to rent a house from my boyfriends grandma. She moved out of state, but has left her home empty. So we rent it from her for $400 per month with everything included. It's great because we have the freedoms of living in a home, at a very low cost. The only issue is that I don't feel like it's my own space and we are simply having an extended visit. Keeping in mind, this is the first time I've lived on my own, so it could be attributed to home sickness, but no matter what I can't get used to this house. Because it's my bf grandmas house, she left everything behind. And she's quite literally a closet hoarder. There are three bedrooms, but two of the rooms are filled to the brim with boxes of old nicknacks and various items. Because of this we have no room to store stuff, and the one bedroom we do have, is very very small (only fits a bed and tiny dresser). In the kitchen, we have no room to store food or our own dishes, because one again each cabinet is stacked full with antique China as she liked to collect those as well.

Now we tried solving this issue by boxing some stuff up and storing it in the basement. Well two weeks ago, the basement flooded. And it was baaaad. Like sewage and whatever else covered the floor and damaged a lot of the items down there. My boyfriends aunt and uncle (who are the caretakers of the house) came and disposed of all of the items damaged, and it encouraged them to actually clean out the basement and get rid of some of the junk. They called and reassured they would take care of all of the mess and even go through the cabinets and other rooms to make more room for us. We were really excited, as they said they were going to do this last weekend while we went out of town. When we got back, we were disappointed to see that not much was different. They just moved the boxes that I packed up into a bed room, but didn't do anything else they claimed they would do besides remove trash. This made me kind of mad as they hype it up to doing much more. My boyfriend tried to get ahold of them and they didn't reply until a week after, saying that they would just come pick up the left over trash from the flood and take it to the dump. But that's it. They didn't even text or call to give an update about what would happen with the basement, considering it has to get gutted because of water damage. (Mold and smells terrible)

Along with that whole fiasco, there are things I don't like about the house. There's carpet in the bathroom (???), the kitchen is very 70's, the living room is filled with a large China cabinet and other bulky furniture which doesn't allow us to bring our own contemporary furniture. Carpet is over 30 years old and stained, and we have gotten them professionally cleaned. The walls were all covered in old wall paper and scratched, but we took care of that as it wasn't a hard fix.

Am I being selfish for thinking that his family should of done more to help? We really want to make this place work because it's cheap, but we think we may be happier living in an apartment. I personally feel like this place is making me overwhelmed, and I'd rather feel more comfortable in an apartment with brand new appliances, clean new carpet, and other benefits (gym, pool, lounge) that come with living in a nice apartment. But I know in an apartment things could go wrong too, but I also think it'd be less stress on us...

I just need a second opinion.. thanks.

Tl;dr Renting a home for cheap but has issues that make me not want to live there. Should we just move into a nice, brand new apartment that we can afford?
