My comments/thoughts/highlights on Tekken 7’s Story Mode and Character Episodes
Before you ask, I won’t list/include all chapters and Character Episodes, just some that I find interesting to discuss/talk about.
#Story Mode – “The Mishima Saga”
Prologue
-
Ok, I had to admit, when I replayed this chapter, I was curious if something different would happen if I didn’t press anything on the “Throw Kazuya Off” part. Guess it wasn’t.
-
I’m glad that Young Heihachi is available as customization parts for Heihachi. I feared that it would end up as a Legendary Souls situation.
Chapter 1
- When Heihachi reclaimed the Zaibatsu and announced The King of Iron Fist Tournament, I wondered, was there even a tournament during the events of Tekken 6 (since the majority of the story happens in Scenario Campaign, and obviously, it happened off the tournament grounds)?
Chapter 2
-
Such a fun and awesome chapter to play. The fact you are able to play the Tekken 5 opening just screams nostalgia. Not to mention the killer background music playing during the battle.
-
While it may be a great chapter, at the same time, it kinda felt like a missed opportunity to include more canon battles from past Tekken games.
Chapter 6
- For some reason, this battle with Alisa gave me Scenario Campaign flashbacks…
Chapter 8
-
I liked how they managed to explain why/how they integrated Akuma in the story, pretty much telling that it’s not clearly the same Akuma from the Street Fighter canon.
-
That temporary team-up with Heihachi and Akuma in fending off the Jacks was pure badass, to say.
Chapter 9
-
That reunion with Alisa and Lars was so cute. As the great Lee would say, “How moving! Excellent!” Oh boy, I’m guessing the shippers are squealing with joy.
-
Even the moment with Lee controlling the helicopter was pure satisfaction and excellent. I thought the Zaibatsu were successful in capturing Jin, but it wasn’t!
Chapter 10-12
- This is the point where the story reaches at its peak. Things are about to get dark and interesting at this point.
Chapter 13
- Oh…my…what a tragic one. The fact it shows flashbacks of Heihachi and Kazumi living a good life makes this more emotional. Not to mention the clear integration of rage and sorrow. Even if there were a few Mind Screw/Mind Fuck parts, it pretty much tells you why Heihachi became who he is.
Chapter 14 and Epilogue
-
Holy…shit. The amount of action and emotion thrown in here is so damn awesome. First of all, it starts out slow, with Kazuya and Heihachi, fighting like king of iron fists. Then it starts to ramp up once Kazuya uses his Devil powers a little. After that, all of sudden, Kazuya fully transforming into a Devil and wrecks the hell out of Heihachi. That moment itself just screams OMGWTF!? for me, that Devil design is so bad-ass. Then, shit gets real as Heihachi unleashes his inner rage…
-
As I witnessed the conclusion of the Mishima Saga, I couldn’t help but to feel speechless. Seeing those archived clips of Kazuya and Heihachi just before Kazuya lands the final blow just made me realized how much I’ve grown with this franchise. As one says, “All good things must come to an end.” Indeed, Kazuya throwing Heihachi off to the lava marks the end of a long saga, and marks the beginning of a new saga. Even if Kazuya finally managed to avenge his mother’s death, the world is still at a brink of chaos.
-
In my opinion, the reason why they decided to kill off Heihachi is most likely due to the passing of his previous voice actor, Daisuke Gori. While I do commend Unsho Ishizuka (the current voice actor) for his performance as Heihachi, somehow, it kinda lost the charm in the spirit of the character itself. Again, it’s an opinion.
-
The cliffhanger is sure an interesting lead-up for the next game, with the fact Jin ready to settle the score with his nightmares once and for all, becoming a hero once more. Also, from the looks of it, it seems he has learned to use his Devil powers at will. (Blood Vengeance doesn’t count, it takes place in an alternative universe anyway)
-
In addition, I can’t be the only one here who expected Jun to appear at some point in the main story…
Special Chapter
- A special chapter indeed. Geez, this battle with “Shin” Akuma had me raging for real, and took me like almost 2-3 hours…
Overall, despite some flaws as people noticed, in my opinion, I find the main story (Mishima Saga) to be great, interesting, and entertaining. I commend Harada and co. for their efforts. They have done their best in creating this kind of story mode in the world of Tekken.
#Character Episodes
As I said earlier, I’ll won’t discuss all of them.
Gigas
- He ain’t Marduk, case closed. Obvious enough that he’s Katarina’s foster father.
Hwoarang
- While he may have fought Devil Jin, just what the hell happened to Baek anyway?
Jack-7
- Really? Couldn’t he just fly when he tried to get the paper nor when he fell down? Freaking Lucky Chloe, she just made Jack-7 unlucky.
King
- That was quite badass for him in using moves from Marduk and Armor King. Goes off to show you he has a sense of kindness, courage, and dedication. I hope Armor King redeems himself after the bloody brawl he had with Marduk.
Leo
- Even this game is seem aware of Japan’s weird stuff, based from Leo’s dialogue. Also, really? They had to refer Leo as a “he”?
Lucky Chloe
- I feel sorry for Eddy himself and all Eddy Gordo fans out there. Also applies to Eddy’s Character Episode.
Master Raven
- As I said many times, just WHAT THE HELL happened to the Raven we all know and love? He’s been mentioned several times in her Character Episode...
Paul
- What’s this? Johnny Cage’s MK4 ending? And who thought it was a good idea to have someone in the audience bring a FREAKING SWORD!? Did he/she seriously thought this was ECW?
Steve
- Out of all the Character Episodes, this was the most interesting. There is a sense of character and story development in this. The fact Nina and Steve have spilled the beans has gleamed satisfaction for me but at the same time, I feel bad for Steve the moment he said that she (Nina) could be his mother, causing the latter to not accept the fact.
Miguel
- Another interesting Character Episode, as there is also a sense of character and story development for Miguel himself. It’s quite a nice thing to see that he decided to spare Jin’s life, knowing that his revenge may feel nothing if he killed him outright/on the spot.
Yoshimitsu
Looking at all the Character Episodes, I would say some of these happen between the main story and some happen after the main story.
That’s all I have to say.
