FreeNAS box won't post
###Troubleshooting Help:
What is your parts list?
This is computer I built to run FreeNAS at home.
- Motherbord/CPU: ASRock C2550D4I / Intel Avoton 4 Core C2550
- Power Supply: Seasonic SS-400FL (400 Watt)
- Memory: 2x Crucial DDR3-1600 8GB ECC
- OS Storage: Sandisk 16 GB USB drive
- Other storage: 6x 3TB HDDs
Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.
I've had a lot of trouble with this PC over the last 2 years of having it. Most recently, it wouldn't power on. No fan spin, nothing. I replaced the power supply. Now I get fan spin, but the computer won't post. Fans spin, LEDs light up, and the IPMI website is available (the motherboard has some remote management features, which I can't use because you need to run a Windows application to configure credentials).
List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.
- I've attempted to boot the computer without the any of the HDDs connected or powered. Fans spin, LEDs light up, no video out.
- I've attempted to start with nothing plugged into the motherboard except a CPU fan, keyboard, and video out (no RAM), still nothing (can't get into BIOS even). Fans spin, LEDs light up, no video out.
Provide any additional details you wish below.
I feel like it's probably a bad CPU/Mobo at this point. I am curious if RAM might be the issue. Should the computer be able to get anywhere without any RAM (like letting me at least get into the BIOS).
If I do need a new motherboard, I'm open to suggestions. It needs to be low power, x86, have at least 6 SATA connections, but performance really isn't an issue (home server where performance doesn't matter - backups and long term storage only). I don't really care for this mobo, as it doesn't even heave a place to plug in a speaker to hear post noises, and the management features are not useful. ECC RAM support is strongly recommended for FreeNAS, so I'm tempted to keep that a requirement.
