Consolidating student loans: A good idea?
I'm currently in a less-than-stellar financial situation and trying to make things a little easier by building up an emergency fund. The only major recurring bills that can be changed currently are mine and my wife's student loans: totaling about $800/month. Repayments are all income based and change from year-to-year, based on how much we make (~$100,000/annually altogether).
We both work in a field that is currently eligible for the Public Service Student Loan Forgiveness. Given that neither of us can foresee the future, and that the foreseeable future shows our payments increasing due to slight cost of living increases in salary, is consolidating the student loan debt an option here?
We really need to free up some money to build an emergency fund. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading!
