The Worst Seasons in the Past 25 Years Part 3: Alaska Anchorage

Welcome to the Worst Season in the Past 25 Years, a series in which r/CollegeHockey reviews the worst season for all 60 Division I teams over the summer to alleviate the crushing boredom known as the off-season and take a horrific tour down memory lane.

If you are interested in writing an entry for your team, please let me know via PM. I’ll be posting entries on weekdays at approximately at 6 pm Eastern time and will be going in alphabetical order. If an entry is not posted at that time, assume that “real life” has gotten in the way and that I am not able to post. If I am aware in advance that I will not post at 6 pm on a particular day, I will announce it in prior posts as a heads up.

And now.../r/CollegeHockey presents the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves (WHAT’S A SEAWOLF? I’M A SEAWOLF!!) Since joining the WCHA, the Seawolves have struggled to get a winning season. However, the worst season in recent memory for the Seawolves is…

2002-2003 Record: 1-7-28 (W-D-L); WCHA record: 0-6-22 (W-D-L; 10th/10th)

Win: Alaska Fairbanks

Ties: Iona, Minnesota Duluth, Denver, @Minnesota Duluth, @MSU-Mankato, Michigan Tech, Wisconsin (x2)

Losses: Alaska Fairbanks, Maine, Minnesota Duluth, @Colorado College (x2), @North Dakota (x2), Denver, @Minnesota Duluth, @MSU-Mankato, Michigan Tech, North Dakota (x2), @Michigan Tech (x2), Minnesota (x2), @Wisconsin (x2), MSU-Mankato (x2), @St. Cloud St. (x2), @Alaska Fairbanks (x2), @Colorado College (x2)*

Biggest Beatdown: Alaska Anchorage 2 - North Dakota 11

Head Coach: John Hill

In head coach Hill’s second season, the Seawolves only managed to get one win. Curtis Glencross led the team in scoring with 11 while Ales Parez managed to get 22 assists. In between the pipes, Kevin Reiter had a save percentage of .887 and a GAA of 3.71.

The season started with an exhibition with the Royal Military and a home series against Alaska Fairbanks; the Seawolves went 2-1-0 in this period. Unfortunately, that win against UAF was the only win recorded in NCAA competition. October ended with a tie to Iona and a loss to Maine.

November began with a pair of games against Minnesota Duluth, then a trip to Colorado College and North Dakota. To finish off the month, UAA hosted Denver and went to the Midwest to play Minnesota Duluth. In that time, 3 ties were to be had, with all other games ending in defeat.

December was nearly barren save for an away series with MSU-Mankato; the Seawolves did not see any official action until the beginning of January when UAA faced off with Michigan Tech. 2 draws the following week against Wisconsin probably lifted the spirits temporarily; the weekend after that saw the worst defeat of the season to North Dakota. A trip to face the Huskies and a home series against Minnesota rounded off the month of January.

February saw defeats against Minnesota (the second game of the home series), away to Wisconsin, MSU-Mankato, and St. Cloud St. The regular season ended with two away defeats to rivals UAF; in the WCHA tournament, the Seawolves were eliminated in two games against Colorado College.

After the 2002-03 season, the Seawolves’ seasonal records seem to be in a constant state of flux. UAA has had two head coaches since Hill left after the 2004-05 season. Only one of those seasons, 2013-14, saw a winning percentage greater than .500. It seems that UAA’s glory days are in the past.

For Week 1 of this series, we will look at the worst seasons in recent memory for the following schools: Alaska _ (Fairbanks), and American International. Once again, if you are interested in doing the entry for your favorite school, shoot me a PM. Your school, name, and date will be added at the end of each post to serve as a reminder. So far, the following people have inquired about a spot:

SchoolUsernameTentative Date
Cornellu/ABigRedWallaby6/29
LSSUu/binkelman7/10
Penn Stateu/saucysalesman8/8
RPIu/Nicholas12278/16
Unionu/azureamor8/22
Vermontu/LocksTheFox8/23

The format for the posts in the series is still being worked on and your input is greatly appreciated. I hope that everyone can get a kick out of their rivals’ misery and learn a little bit about the history of this great sport!

Finally, a shoutout to u/saucysalesman who inspired the idea of this series for doing one over at r/cfb. Additionally, shoutout to r/CollegeBasketball for the idea of the sub-par MS Paint logos for each school.
