INTRO

If you are an ex-smoker, you’ve probably aware that a mouth-to-lung (MTL) setup best imitates the feeling of smoking a combustible. When the vaping industry really got going, MTL was a staple and was easily achievable with most attys. Unfortunately in today’s vaping market, MTL tanks are few and do not get much attention due to the lower demand.

So I was very happy to see a new MTL-designed tank come into the market. As someone who still enjoys MTL for stealth setups (with a higher nic. juice), it is one of the best MTL tanks I have used recently. Additionally, it has the availability to sub-ohm with 0.6ohm coils.

The Nicolas is a short 22mm MTL tank, with 9 customizable airflow settings to cater to a flavorful MTL experience.

OVERVIEW

First let’s look at the two coil options. The 0.6ohm coil is perfect for vapers, like me, who both enjoy direct to lung (DTL) and MTL setups. It packs a little bit more of a punch by having a slightly larger diameter coil. The recommended wattage for it is 18-25w. Using it over 25w will result in a higher potential for dry hits (especially with max VG juices). At 30w I could tell after two quick drags that if I hit it a third time, in succession, I would get a dry hit. At 24w, with a 70/30 vg/pg blend, I had no issues chain vaping with 4/5 airflow holes open. Note that the 0.6ohm coil came to 0.64ohm on several of my devices.

The 1.8ohm coil is a less diameter wrap than the 0.6ohm and has a suggested wattage of 9-13w. Like the last coil, this also read off on several mods at 1.83/1.84ohm. With this one I did not have any issues using it at 13w and chain vaping with 3/5 airflow holes open. Even at 15w it held up very well but after 4 consecutive hits, I could feel the lack of a good throat hit and knew that if I continued it would probably get a dry hit. If you are a hardcore MTL vaper or a recent ex-smoker, the 1.8ohm coil would be best for you.

To install a new coil, all that’s needed is to unscrew the base, pull out the old coil and pop in a new (primed) one. Very easy. The coils are all friction-fit so there is no threading to worry about. With both coils, I did not experience any leaking whatsoever. My only suggestion is, when taking out the coil to pull from the first outer ring and not the connection end, and when installing a new coil to make sure the wick holes are aligned with the open spaces on the tank.

To refill, screw off the top and pour, drop, or squeeze in the juice. Just like other top-fill tanks, make sure to close the airflow when refilling. This will reduce the amount of juice pulled into the coil and give the user a more consistent vape.

Finally, let’s dive into why the Nicolas is a fantastic MTL tank. The narrow diameter of the coils plus the tank help, but it is the airflow options that really make it a great MTL device. Now the 5-hole airflow design is not unique to the Nicolas, but in addition there is a single unique opening for the user to line up one of the five airflow holes for even more restricted airflow. This gives the user 9 different airflow settings to get the exact type of vape they desire. From more airflow to least the order is: 5 hole, 4 hole, 3 hole, largest single, 2nd largest single, 3rd largest single, 2 hole, 4th largest single, and 1hole = smallest single.

CONCLUSION

Overall, I’m impressed with the Nicolas MTL tank. It is a very solid MTL tank and is able to fine-tune the amount of airflow desired above any other MTL tank that I’ve tried to provide a solid throat hit with on-point flavor. Plus it looks pretty good too =) . My only gripe is with the drip tip that comes included. For a MTL tank, I would expect it to be at least a touch longer for a “true” MTL setup. Thankfully, the Nicolas can utilize any 510 drip tip you prefer.

All that said, if you are considering a new MTL tank take a look at the Nicolas.
