RHBH vs. LHBH I think we've all been had.......

I'm learning to throw these things. While doing so, I'm studying form. We all do this, right? I compare it to sports I'm used to; ball golf, baseball, rocket league, soccer. There are a lot of similarities, and a lot of differences. I've decided that disc golf has somehow tricked an entire sport to play LH dominate.

Let's start with the throw. The throw is driven with the hips. Beyond, that the rest of the body is put into a whip and develops the snap that sends the disc moving. This is not unlike all of the other sports. Kicking a soccer ball requires loading the hips and driving forwards with them to snap the leg at the right time and develop a swinging motion. A pitcher on the mount winds up, drives with the hips and the arm snaps along shooting the ball towards the dugout, if I'm pitching, or the strike zone when someone good at pitching is on the mound. It is similar for a batter. Lift the leg, drive with the hips, upper body comes around and the arms snap.

So lets talk about some specifics. If a right handed batter steps up to the plate, they drive the right hip forward to develop the swing. If a right handed pitcher winds up, it is the right hip that drives forward while the left foot comes down. A right handed golfer, drives the right hip forward to bring the swing around.

Do you see where I am going with this? I bet you do.

Now you might be arguing that in disc golf the disc is in the right hand, therefore it is right handed, I'm just nit picking. Let's look at ball golf. What does the right arm do for a right handed golfer. it develops no power, only guides the club as the left arm pulls through. OK what about baseball. A right handed batter, is similar to a golfer, but the pitcher is clearly using the right arm. Soccer...... well technically there is no use of the arms, so..... whatever.

The only thing that is absolutely consistent is the driving side of the hips determines if you are RH or LH,

except in disc golf.

What on earth is this post supposed to be saying?

Errrr, what about forehand? And tennis?

Pretty solid argument. I'm so bad at tennis that I actually throw the racket to the hand that needs it. I can't really comment on the form there.

On forehand, I think the argument could be made that forehand with the right arm is also with the right hip and would be a RH throw. Too that point, both throws with the right hip result in the disc spinning counter clockwise.

It's true. The baseball swing weight shift and hip movement is very very similar to the opposite hand disc golf throw. Often when thinking about the body as a whip for disc golf, in my mind I correlate it to throwing a fastball. You're getting flak for this, it seems like, but you're not wrong.

Golf and baseball use right hand as guiding hand cause its more important to hit the ball then hit it as far as humanly possible. If you are right handed it just feels natural for the vast majority to swing with left hip facing target. I also think in baseball your right arm is providing lots of the power, try swinging one handed, nothing like swinging a a golf club one handed.

Its not being had or tricking a whole group of players, its that when ynour right handed you throw things from your right hand by default. The simple answer to your post is take 10 people and have them throw a disc with both hands, you'll see why vast majority throw way they do.

Edit: also what about hockey? Right hand power hand but lead with left hips.

This is why being ambidextrous is so easy. People just can't seem to get it though. Ian throws me a shoutout about my ambidextrousness around the 15:45 mark.

400' RH and LH? Very nice. I'm not really good with either arm, or hip, depending on your definition, but I am working on learning both. I'm better with my weak side than I thought I would be, but my right hips are more coordinated than my left hip, so.... this is where the confusion starts.

While my distance is going down as I've been playing less I was hitting 400+ in the field this past weekend with both hands.

The quickest way to improve is to do simple tee work. Hit a baseball off a tee from both sides. This will help get your body get used to the motion and make it easier to translate on the course IMO

I kind of understand your confusion, but there is a big difference for one reason. The way your hand interacts with the disc is so crucial compared to the baseball and soccer examples. In baseball you are holding a bat, soccer you are not gripping the ball, just striking it. So obviously a right-handed person will grip a disc with her/his right hand. For a right-handed person, RHBH is going to generate more power than a forehand, so it is generally preferred. Try throwing a ball with your non dominant hand and you can see why training your hand to do what it needs is harder than throwing a backhand.

Sometime when writing,it can be helpful to inject a funny tid bit to keep the audience's attention. While that bit may have been considered inappropriate for a college paper, this is reddit. Just be thankful it wasn't a dickbutt.

as a right hander i had a bit more power batting lefty but better contact batting righty. when i had an injury and could not throw discs right handed i quickly developed 250ft power throwing lefty including a mean fairway driver roller haha. Myelin definitely comes into play though especially for those of us nearing masters age.

Whelp, I had to look up myelin. It is pretty early in the morning to have learned something already. I thank you for that.

I'm opposite from you. I write, eat left and throw, swing right. I'm torn if I should practice up left or right, im pretty bad at either, but currently more snap in the right. Batting for me is more power right handed, and more consistently left (probably because I try and kill it less).

And I'm coming up on masters age. These kids today......... Lol

Just an attempt at a discussion about disc golf. Don't worry, there are plenty of mail call posts, if you are not into that sort of stuff.
