I came soooo close to being hired

About 3 weeks ago, my good friend told me about an opening at her school which is a Catholic school. She mentioned me to her principal and the principal said she really wanted to meet me. So I sent over my resume, letter of interest, and license, and set up an interview. This school actually has two principals which is unusual, so I interviewed with both at the same time. As it turns out, one principal I went to elementary school with her nephew, and the other one has a son who played baseball with my older brother all 4 years in high school. We ended up chatting casually after the interview for quite a while since we discovered how much we all had in common. They said they would be calling me soon to let me know their decision.

Next day my friend tells me that one of the principals told her she LOVED me and thanked her for recommending me, so I had a great feeling about everything. I got a call about a week later, and they had a dilemma: a few days after I interviewed, the parish priest said he wanted to reconfigure some of the grade levels (for those of you not familiar with Catholic schools, the pastor has a lot of jurisdiction over the school usually). This was in order to save money and it ended up eliminating a position - the position I interviewed for. The principal told me that both of them really wanted to hire me but now weren't sure if there was any place for me. They also said that this "reconfiguring" had eliminated a current teacher's job, but they created a position for her in junior high and offered it to her, and said she had until June 15 to decide if she was accepting it or not. They told me if she decides to leave, they would offer that position to me.

Well today was June 15 and they called and said that the teacher had decided to stay and that unfortunately, they had no position for me. They both emphasized how much they loved me and that they had sincerely wanted to hire me had this not all happened. They also said that in the future if any position opens up, I will be the first person they'd call.

I was honestly so disappointed. This school was PERFECT for me- near to home, I'm familiar with the neighborhood, and I'd be working with a friend. I know the silver lining is that I made such a great impression that they want to keep me in mind for future openings, but I was sooo hoping to be hired here for next year. I have two other interviews coming up soon but this was my ideal location. I'm bummed.
