Something like Suttree
Does anyone know of any novels that might scratch the same itch that Suttree did for me? I'm not necessarily looking for something set in the same time or place. I'm looking for another character study of a man who lives on the fringes of society, by choice or necessity. I'm looking for something with beautiful prose, something existential, something environmentally and socially and even politically conscious. Something that creates the same sense of place that Suttree creates for Knoxville.
Some of my other favorites, if it helps, are Shadow Country (Matthiessen), Under the Volcano (Lowry), and Warlock (Hall). I'm looking for something pretty cerebral, a little dark. I'm not put off my length or subject matter, but I can't stand cloying sentimentality.
