Tips for RE "veteran" who has yet to beat RE1?

I've played and successfully completed Resident Evil 4,5,6,7, Revelations 2, and a number of spin off games a hefty number of times, and have at least played all the others.

But for some reason, I can't pull myself to play REmake all the way through. I own it for GC, Wii and XB1 but whenever I try, I have Vietnam flashbacks from when I first tried it as a little kid.

I know it's significantly different from the newer ones, and I've watched countless walkthroughs and enjoyed them all, but as soon as I fire it up and try it, my childhood PTSD or something kicks in and I don't get farther than the guest house, either from that or the difficulty.

I'm hyped for RE2 remake and want to conquer REmake before it comes out, so are there any tips or pointers anyone can give to help me out?
