Looking for advice using An Post to ship products for a small e-commerce website

Hi Im setting up a small e-commerce website and will do my posting through an post, Im looking for any tips or advice regarding avoiding heavy postage fees,

Lets say if its a t-shirts could I package it in a small box thin enough to fit through a letter box (about an inch thick), would this approach save me massive postage fees?
