Can you play the game singleplayer? and is there anything to do without PvP?

I love how the game looks it truly feels like post apocalyptic world. Some videos show that the community is friendly and you can meet other survivors and walk around the amazing map, but then you just get killed and lose all your progress which I don't enjoy in games like these.
