[Help] Kennel Cough: What are the stages of Kennel Cough?
Kennel Cough: What are the stages of Kennel Cough? I have a 2.5 year old GSD whom I adopted a year ago. He has taken classes for being aggressive and reactive to other dogs and after a slowly conditioning him to get along with other dogs, I recently began taking him to the dog park. He has gotten much more social.
Although he was vaccinated a year ago, I didn't know that he needed another yearly vaccination. Anyway, he has come down with Kennel Cough. Please do not suggest taking him to the vet ASAP! I was planning on taking him to the veterinarian tomorrow but I was told by the office that I may wait it out for him to heal himself, unless he shows labored breathing or lack of appetite. I have been documenting his symptoms since last Monday (five days ago) for the vet. His eating, drinking and sleeping have been adequate.
----- Going to the Dog Park almost daily for past month -------
Sunday Night - Very infrequent light coughing; he has never been ill
Monday: Light coughing randomly - gave him a little Robitussin DM
Tuesday: Light coughing randomly - gave him a little Robitussin DM
Wednesday: Mostly quiet - gave him some Robitussin DM so he would sleep well
Thursday: Mostly quiet - gave him some Robitussin DM so he would sleep well Coughing in the middle of the night and some hacking of white foam Hacking white foam is apparently normal with KC* He then went back to sleep
Friday: He is quiet and sleeping but seems to be lightly coughing in his sleep but not waking up, coughs are very random to almost none
MY QUESTION: I have read that KC can last from 7-21 days, with around 10 being typical, and that the symptoms described are typical of the stages (light cough, dry hacking, white foam hacking...) and that white foam hacking suggests that he is in the latter stages of Kennel Cough (its going away/healing).
Would you kindly outline the EXACT STAGES of KC that you may have experienced with your dog? What are the stages of healing I should expect now? I also understand I have to keep him away from other dogs for at least a month. the vet said she may give him no-antibiotics, OR a cycle of Doxycycline or Azithromycin depending on the severity of his symptoms.
Please be as SPECIFIC as you can with regard to the TIMEFRAME so the vet, can make sense of where he may be re: healing.
