Little boy blue and the man on the moon
Alright so my days off every week are Wednesday and Thursday, right? And my brother just so happened to be getting released on a Wednesday. Only thing is, he was in a federal prison and our nearest one is seven hours away, so that meant a seven hour drive.
My parents are separated. My dad's remarried and so my mom had me, my older brother, younger sister, and had another son from a different father (the guy is garbage), and raised us all on her own. My dad lives the next town over but he still keeps in touch and helps out so much with all this shit with my brother.
Anyway, I don't see my dad much because I'm a recluse and don't see anyone really. But he asked me if I wanted to tag along to pick up my brother. It was a shot in the dark cause who wants to drive seven hours twice right? But I mean, I wasn't gonna do much else but get stoned and watch Cosmos with my time off anyway, so I asked if it'd be cool if I brought some weed.
It was, and it was so fucking chill.
My dad's always known I smoked, and he's always hated it but other than suggesting I at least cut back every so often he doesn't judge or act differently because of it.
Anyway the drive itself was kind of fucked, we got maybe an hour away and realized we forgot all my brother's shit back at the house lmao. We were originally supposed to get to the town the prison's in around 8:30 but didn't get there till shortly after 11.
But after a lot of Googling I was able to find a beer store in a town along the highway that was miraculously still open. My dad went in while I sat outside having a dart then a couple tokes, but I remember I was looking at the sky cause I could still see a fair bit of stars even in the fairly lit parking lot. Now, I know the night sky pretty damn well. We're tight. I can tell when I'm seeing a planet and when I'm seeing a star, or when I'm seeing a "UFO" or just a satellite.
Get ready for this shit. I was looking straight ahead at Saturn (not sure which direction as in North or East or what) and overhead there was another source of light that was steady and almost yellowish. It wasn't twinkling or flashing or anything, but it was standing still and it definitely wasn't any planet we know of... So I kept my eye on it and made sure they didn't lose focus. After maybe a minute it moved ever so slightly, and I was getting ready for it to disappear. But then it moved back to where it was. And then it moved again, ever so slightly, but kept going this time. It wasn't moving that far across the sky at all. It looked like it was really, really far away and also really, really small. So anyway my dad started walking out of the store and I'm like, "Eh dad, I think we're gonna see a satellite," cause I was thinking it was gonna start moving the way it should.
While he was trying to find what I was pointing at, it started moving way fuckin fast and left like a trail of light. It didn't look like fire or anything, it looked like a single point of light stretching itself out, but was also moving. And then it shrunk back to normal size and made a very small circle.
My dad saw it "stretched out," too but lost interest and got in the car to make a call. I shrugged my shoulders and joined him but we weren't leaving yet so I went for one last smoke. I was curious and looked to where I first saw the "star," and it was there again, the same size it was when I first saw it and it was making another small circle lmao.
I laughed to myself and got in the car accepting the fact I'll never know what it was. I wish the world saw it. And for the people that are going to ask why I didn't video tape it, you try to even take a picture of a star with your iPhone and let me see how that looks.
Something I should mention... It wasn't nearly as bright as I might have made it out to be, not at first. When it was still and then making circles it was maybe as bright as the North Star, and that's like the 36th brightest star in the sky. But when it was moving and stretchig it was for sure brighter than Saturn. So I'm sure someone else must have seen it too.
Honestly I'm so sorry. I didn't even mean to type all of that out at first.
The main thing was I just had a great time doing nothing but sitting in a car for a seven hours with my old man, the highlight being when he started humming Cat's in the Cradle, and me being the DJ decided to play it seeing as I've never given it a true listen.
Sweet Jesus, I wish I could explain the feelings I got.
