Job market for a technical/proposal writer in Roanoke?

I grew up in Roanoke but haven't lived in the area for about 7 or 8 years since I was 18. Over that time I've gone to college, joined the workforce, and lived in a couple big cities. I don't know if it's nostalgia for my childhood or the lower cost of living, but it feels like Roanoke is calling me back.

When I lived in Roanoke, the only job market that mattered was chain retail store would hire a highschooler for minimum wage. Now that I've got college degrees, professional certifications, and professional experience, I'm wondering what type of a career-oriented job market exists in Roanoke, because I really don't have a clue what people do there other than my family.

I've been working as a technical/proposal writer dealing with information technology and scientific writing and research for the past few years. Attention to detail, grammar, consistency throughout long documents, formatting, and pithy writing are a few resume buzzwords to describe my professional skills.

Does anyone know if there Roanoke can support someone with these skill sets, what companies might need someone like that, or what I could expect in salary for this type of job back home?

Thanks!
