Roommate is depressed. Am I being a dick?
My roommate has depression and just sits around the house all day doing nothing. Over the course of the past year or so, I've watched him refuse to take care of himself or get help, even ending up in the emergency room last winter because he got sick and wouldn't do anything about it until it was ER bad. I say "refuse" because all his friends have been telling him to see a doctor and help him for the entire time I've known him.
He doesn't have a job (his parents pay his rent) and he just sits on the couch gaming all the time. He bathes maybe once a month. He is always complaining about how tired and hungry he is, but won't eat or sleep. Seriously, he'll go days without eating or sleeping. When he does sleep it's almost always on the couch in the common space in the middle of the day. He snores when he's asleep and when he's awake makes gross, wet mouth noises. I don't know what the deal with that is, but the sounds this guy makes are unbearable to me and I've become hyperaware of them, even when I'm in a different room. I try and be out of the house as much as possible since it's a tiny one bedroom. (I'm a college student in Los Angeles and can't afford anything bigger.)
When he does his chores he does them poorly or doesn't finish them at all. (I think he doesn't know how.) I used to ask him to do them, but I'm uncomfortable nagging him about it and it's easier to pick up the slack myself.
We aren't friends and I don't feel like it's my responsibility to deal with him, but my girlfriend thinks it's messed up that I don't at least feel bad for him. At some point I gave up on attempting to interact with him except when absolutely necessary and I think he knows I don't like him, even though I haven't said anything directly. Am I being insensitive by ignoring him and letting him self destruct? Side note, I'm pretty much stuck with him until I graduate next spring.
tldr; I started avoiding my roommate because his depression annoys me.
