(CAN) Best use of 100k with low salary, no debt, no credit?
Hey everyone,
A friend has inherited $100,000 which is currently sitting in a savings account, though not sure exactly what type but my guess is a TFSA. It's earning approx $400 per month, but this is only a temporary location for the money.
This friend makes ~30k/yr, has 0 debt, no credit (no cards, no tangible bills to build from) and is also 60 years old who is a life long renter.
I believe the best action would be to put the funds toward buying a house, as their current area isn't where one would prefer to retire. Of course some issues arise; Canada has implemented a new rule where (I forget the %, it used to be 38) at 30k/yr they allow a monthly payment of approx $825 on a mortgage balance of $146k. In the market here, assuming we use the $100k, you cannot find a house for $246k. The only thing in that price range is 1 bedroom apartments, or very old town homes.
We are stumped at this point and looking for some direction.
