Need help figuring out this section of a Dirty Projectors song

My friend who is a much better musician than I was talking about how great of a composer David Longstreth is and cited this particular section of the song as something really cool and interesting. It's the section around 1:48-1:58. He went into a bit more detail about it but I forget and I wanted to see if anyone here could help me dissect it.
