Cavalier orrrr

Ok, so everyone is knocking the new fighter sub-class. I have really wanted to make a noble, Don quixotic character, mounted with a lance. Ever on his quest.

If the cavalier is so bad, what class would I be instead? Beast master ranger? Battle master fighter?
