Existential VR Moment with Medium and Unity

Fluff

So the other day I had a kind of existential moment in the Rift that I thought I'd share with all you fine people, if you feel so inclined as to listen.

Medium is really great. I'm a fairly decent programmer, but I know pretty much nothing about 3D modeling, total black magic box. So of course, Medium is a fantastic tool for the likes of me so I can get some general shapes and concepts together in a quick and fairly coherent fashion (especially since they overhauled the exporting features, awesome stuff).

For the past month or so, I've been working on a hobby VR game that I'm pumped to share with you guys when it's ready show, but that day is not today. So I spent a good hour sculpting a chunk of landmass that represents the game level the player will traverse. It certainly isn't anything fancy, but I sit there holding it in the palm of my hand with a particular sense of glowing satisfaction that only VR can provide.

I export the model, open up my project in Unity, import the assets, drop it in the scene, give it a mesh collider, ect., ect. ect. and I hit the go button and throw on the headset...

This is where the existential part comes in. Let me tell you, my brow was adequately furrowed. This place I was in, I'd been here before, but it's... wrong. Something in the way I recall this place and this structure is different than what I'm experiencing now. As I walked around I realized, being this small insignificant creature on the surface where I have no intrinsic way of impacting the world, and the god like agency of total control in crafting it in Medium are at complete odds with each other within my subconscious.

It's befuddling. It's stupefying. It's really, really interesting and I think it points to a power within VR as a platform around this kind of dramatic role shifting. Perhaps as VR becomes more prevalent, this concept of perspective will become more malleable and understanding the world around us will become easier as a result. Perhaps this concept of perspective will diminish to a point where it no longer holds any significant bearing on a person's state of mind; that we can appreciate and understand a concept from every perspective in an all encompassing nature.

Anyways, those are some of the thoughts that have been buzzing around in my head. Thanks for reading. :)

TL;DR: Medium is awesome, especially when combined with Unity. VR could change the way we human someday.
