Parents forcing me into a specific university, for a specific course... Please help...
I apologize in advance for the long post, but I was wondering if I would be able to take on a Masters degree in a completely different subject to the Bachelors degree and get a job in the Masters degree field, even if the Bachelors degree was for a 'professional' subject?
I would go by the traditional route and pursue a Masters degree in the same course as my Bachelors, but I feel as if I have no choice but to study a course I don't particularly like, at a University that I don't particularly like either.
Regarding university applications, my parents decided to create and submit my university application for me. They inputted everything themselves and chose my university courses. I was unable to control anything in my university application because all of it was done forcefully by them, against my will. Unfortunately, the university courses they made me apply for are not ones that I am interested in and wish to pursue. The personal statement they submitted was written by me, but I felt like I had no choice but to write it catered to their desired course for me, because they watched me write it up and were quick to point out details they didn't like in the writing. I have told them about my lack of interest in what they want me to pursue, and have tried explaining it to them in a logical manner, but they continue to force their desires onto me...
To make things worse, my parents submitted their contact details into my application and not mines. All offer updates get sent to them, not me, and they are able to accept the offers for me, without my permission.
I live in Hong Kong, and the universities my parents made me apply to are local ones. Though I also applied to the UK and was given the freedom to control my UCAS application, my parents decided that they would not support me going to the UK at all. They won't pay for my tuition if it's a UK university, and they said that they would force me to take a gap year and reapply the year after if I didn't get into any of the local universities they made me apply to.
Since then I've basically given up on going to the UK to study, but I have decided on a local university that I prefer over the others. Its ranking isn't bad among the other local universities, but because it's not the highest ranked university in my hometown, my parents are still against me going there.
Recently I went on a university visit, and really didn't like the University my parents wanted me to go to at all... Soon after the visit I decided to have a discussion with my mum privately, regarding universities and my course. Initially it seemed like she would allow me to go to the local university of my choice, and switch courses if I needed to, but since then she's told my dad about all of this. They then told me that they would cut off all ties with me if I changed course, that no company would hire me if I attended the local university of my choice, and proceeded to talk about the benefits of going into the industry they want me to go into.
I'm financially dependent on my parents, and I can't get loans for University either because I'm not classified as an independent student and my parents earn enough money to send me to University. I can't afford to cut ties with them in the middle of my studies, but I know if that if I don't change course, I won't be able to pursue the career I want (which requires a masters degree in my preferred subject).
Should I go back to university and pursue my desired career after getting a degree in the course my parents wanted, I would be graduating and finding my first job in my field 10 years older than the average graduate student...and I'm scared that would make me an undesirable candidate for jobs.
I'm sorry that this was such a long winded post. It's all over the place, but for those who have read it this far, thank you for doing so.
Please, if any of you have suggestions, I would seriously appreciate it... University deadlines are approaching and I don't know what to do.
If I am unable to pursue a Bachelors in the course I desire, would this compromise my future career choices?
