What would you do?
For an idea of my gardening experience: I've grown peppers and tomatoes in containers for several years, but am mostly new to "in ground" gardening. I'm in zone 6b in bone dry Utah. The lot is about a quarter acre.
Goal: To eventually grow the bulk of our produce needs for a family of four.
Time: As a SAHD, I can devote quite a bit of time to this endeavor. Also, I don't expect immediate results.
I'm having trouble finishing up a design for our sunny, south-facing backyard and I'm looking for some suggestions. The backyard is mostly flat thanks to a north-facing boulder retaining wall that slopes in height from about 2' on the east boundary, to just over 6' on the west. I assume, eventually, there will be a privacy fence on top of that wall (lots of winter shade). There is a trellis on the eastern boundary for grapes and a second trellis on the western boundary against another retaining wall with espalier apple trees.
Area 1: 27'x28' between the grape trellis (east) and patio (west) Originally, I thought to fill this with garden boxes. Now I'm thinking dwarf fruit tree guilds (how many?) would be better.
Area 2: 9'x52' between patio/grass (north) and retaining walls (south and west). This space is all but guaranteed to be in deep shade during the winter. I'm really not sure what to here. Maybe an area for some chickens?
Thoughts? Suggestions? Hey, object-overflow, you're crazy and waaayyy over-thinking this!
tl;dr - What to do with 20'x25' and 9'x52' areas?
