07 Chevy Cobalt A/C & Coolant Temp Sensor Problems
2007 Chevy Cobalt LT, 2.2L, 135,000 Miles
I'll try to summarize this as simply as possible. My AC has not been working in my car recently. It blows air and I can change the force of it by turning the knob in the car but its just not cold air. Also, my dash is not able to read my coolant temperature. It just displays as "--- F" right now. First thing I tried was getting some AC Pro and seeing if it was low on refrigerant but the gauge wasn't reading the PSI properly (immediately jumps to the highest it will go). It says on the instructions that if your not getting a reading, your compressor probably isn't working. After doing some online research I found a few posts saying that if a temp sensor stops reading, it will shut the compressor off. Figured I would try replacing the coolant temp sensor and see if that did the trick. After replacing it, I checked the car and it still wasn't reading my coolant temp. I have no idea why this crossed my mind, but I decided to unhook the battery and reset the computer in the vehicle after swapping out the sensor. After a few minutes I connected the battery back up and like magic...coolant temp was reading and AC was full blast. I called it a night at this point and left the car in the garage. Woke up the next morning and started driving to work and not even 10 mins into the drive the coolant temp stopped reading and the AC stopped working at the exact same time. My next thought was that maybe the wiring was loose and I hit some sort of bump on the road and that the connector may need replaced. After I got home I had my girlfriend sit in the car and keep an eye on the dash while I played with the wires attached to the sensor and tried to see if I could trigger a reading but no dice. After this, just out of curiosity, I decided to unhook and reattach the battery again. Go figure, once again it all worked perfectly after this...but sure enough they both quit out on my during my drive to work the next morning. The temp stopped reading and AC shut off literally in the exact same location as it did the previous morning. For what its worth, I found what appeared to be some sort of next under my hood where a rodent of some sort seemed to be nesting. I don't know how long that was there because I drive the car on a near daily basis. It didn't look like anything got chewed up. Looking for any suggestions as to what I should try next. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've had the car for ten years and I really don't want to put much money into it. I plan on getting a new car within the next twelve months so I just need it to get me through this summer. It's hot as shit out right now and I could definitely use some AC.
TLDR: Coolant temp sensor keeps failing & AC not working when it goes down. Replacing temp sensor didn't work, wires seem okay. Detaching battery for a few mins fixes both but only for short period of time then they both fail again.
