Need advice on how to complete a project using recently cut logs for indoor use. Any help appreciated.

I don't have much experience with woodworking, but I'm getting some help to create an extremely simple, minimalist base for a glass coffee table top. The plan is to set the rectangular glass top (27"W x 55" L) on of 4 birch wood logs, each standing on end. Each log will be approximately 16"H with a 12" diameter, which should create a sturdy base even though they aren't connected. My brother back home has already cut the logs about a month ago for me from a tree on our family farm, although if the birch logs don't work out we may try a different wood.

  • Should I be concerned about moisture from the logs seeping out and staining a rug?

  • Would it be best to treat the ends of the logs with a polyurethane coating to seal them and keep the color? My brother has said the ends are turning much darker sitting in the garage for a while.

  • Should I spray the wood with anything to kill/remove any bugs that would be living in the logs?

Any advice on the best way to complete this project would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
