Pinging allies is very confusing

For the most part, the smart pings in this game are very useful. The chat message that pops up is also very helpful! I want to attack this fort! I'm on my way to Boss! It's all true! Except for two of them:

  • Ping an ally
  • Ping 'assist' on an ally

If you ping assist on an ally, two things happen. 1) The chat says "[you] wants [ally] to assist them!" 2) The assist icon appears on the minimap on the ally's location. This sends conflicting signals, since the team is likely to look at the map to discover where you want help.

Possibly because of this, and possibly because it's intuitive, many people regular ping an ally if they want their attention. But the chat message that pops up when you do that is "[you] wants to help [ally]!" This often also sends a conflicting signal.

The solution most people use is to ping help on yourself, and retreat on an ally you want to stop doing what they're doing and help you. This is kinda awkward. Wouldn't it be much better if the regular and assist pings were switched?
