Vegan Survey: update with data
so, I have finished compiling the data, and we got a little over 300 responses! this is a great response! I haven't done much in the way of quantitative data analysis, but some easy things to note: across time points in terms of length of veganism, it seems as though approximately 2/3rds of respondents started out by transitioning to veganism: chart here. It is not shocking that this tracks over time, and there isn't really anything interesting in trends across time here.
Unfortunately, I cannot make any claims about success of veganism based on transition style. To do this I would need data on people who attempted veganism and failed, and unfortunately the respondents in this survey are all still vegan. I'm not sure how I would go about getting the data to do this.
I do have a little more data: I also asked respondents if they had any intentional slip ups in their veganism by eating meat or animal products: the good news is that overwhelmingly, most people have not intentionally eaten meat after transition to veganism: chart here. in the <1 year, 1-5 year, 5-10 year, and 10+ year groups, 9, 10, 4, and 2 vegans have intentionally eaten animal products.
interestingly, a higher proportion of 5-10 year and 10+ year vegans have slipped up in their veganism. for 5-10 year vegans, 15% slip up, for 10+ year about 11% slip up. In contrast, only 7 and 8% respectively slip up for <1 year and 1-5 year vegans. Perhaps this can be attributed to length of time spent being vegan, this would be a pretty logical conclusion. It is difficult to say conclusively what this means given the small number of slip ups that occur in all of these groups though.
I also was interested to see how many of these slip ups can be attributed to vegans vs vegetarians. Across all groups except <1 year vegans, the split is either 50/50, or very nearly 50/50. for <1 year vegans, 2 who slipped were vegan and 7 who slipped were vegetarian. I am not willing to draw conclusions about why this would be given how small the sample of people who slipped up is.
in any case, if you would like to take another survey, please let me know: if there is enough interest, I will try to get a more comprehensive survey together: I will also be asking these same questions again so that we can have a more comprehensive data set to look at and so that we can pair all responses together.
Cheers, neurophil
ps: if anybody has any analyses they'd like done let me know! I would be happy to do so.
