Do I have carpenter ants?

I was in my bed last nice voice chatting on discord, when I saw a gigantic black ant crawling on my bed. I killed it, and examined that it had large pincers. I did some research and found that it was a carpenter ant. This was the only time I've ever encountered them in the house I rent. I also noticed weird sounds coming from the walls not too long ago, but I assumed this was just piping or something else. I put my ear up to the wall and heard the "popping" noise get louder. Note that there is a tree right outside my window touching the house as well. The house is very old, and we have no air conditioning and it gets very humid inside during the summer. There are a lot of holes in the wood around my windows, but it is hard to tell if these are from nails or from possible intruders.

I'm not sure that my frightening experience led me to do a bunch of research and just assume it's carpenter ants, but the popping noise has me especially convinced.
