ABCD's how do you connect to your spiritual heritage?

I come from a fairly religious/spiritual Hindu family. We went to temple at least once a week, said daily prayers at home. I went to a religious class in my teens, learned classical music, the works.... I then proceeded to indiscriminately ignore this side of myself completely for a few years, and then found myself trying to reconnect as I got older.

I took several classes on Hinduism in college, started doing yoga, have tried to join my mom and dad in their different but meaningful approaches towards spiritual connection. Now I don't feel like my spiritual heritage completely defines me but I've definitely learned some interesting things about the essence of Hinduism which have helped give me an identity. Meditation, yoga, and Gita philosophy largely shape my outlook and lifestyle

Most of my Desi friends have no connection or understanding of their spiritual traditions. Now I'm not saying that they are not spiritual, but simply that they don't click with the rituals and philosophy. So many people feel out of touch with services conducted in foreign languages and traditions that seem to be out of touch with materialistic, status driven Desi ideals which seem to be places upon us at infancy. It's funny I remember growing up how we were warned about western culture and how it would make us impure- but many of my Desi friends are more likely to randomly hook up or get wasted. Meanwhile my white friends are going to Yoga and going to meditation retreats.. Not trying to judge anyone here- I'm definitely been on both sides, I just think it's funny

Given how big a role "spirituality" has historically played in the lives of many South Asians, how do you relate to it as an American Desi?? Do you feel completely repulsed? Interested but unsure? The core of who you are?

  • I put spirituality in quotes because what we consider spirituality was just part of daily life for many of our ancestors- puja was as much a part of daily routine as brushing your teeth.

Also this question is obviously open to those of all faiths.

tl;dr I believe there is a lot of beauty and power in our spiritual heritage. Do you feel in touch with these traditions? How do you /do you connect spiritually?
