Can you breathe during local anesthesia ? first time recieving local anesthesia so i'm a bit worried

19F here and i have certain questions about local anesthesia, will you able to breathe and be conscious during surgery, I am a smoker as well quitting after this surgery. Its a small abdominal surgery which takes about 10 minutes the doctor told me.
