When did pressing become a "thing" before getting it slabbed?

Was pressing popular 15 years ago when CGC first started up? Or did that get more popular recently, ie the last 5 years?

I'm curious because I have a comic that has a couple of waves in the cover that might get pressed out, but not sure if it already went through a pressing, but it's rather old (I think graded early 2000's).
