Deciding on a Cleric Domain
So, I have a fairly solid feeling that my character is going to die next session. My group is running Curse of Strahd and we just got into the basement with the Shambling Mound, I am playing an Oath of the Crown paladin, and one of the tenets of the oath is:
Courage. You must be willing to do what needs to be done for the sake of order, even in the face of overwhelming odds. If you don’t act, then who will?
I mentioned to the DM that my character would probably stand to his last, and the DM agreed. I also think it might raise the stakes of the campaign a little more that the group leader that everyone has been leaning on would die and leave them a bit directionless in a desolate place like Barovia.
ANYWAY, because I like the class fantasy of the 'Holy Knight' I decided I was going to pick up with the team as a cleric at an unspecified location later on. But I just keep going back and forth about which cleric I want to play.
The group composition (assuming everyone else makes it out of death house) is a Bladelock Warlock, Champion Fighter, Hunter Ranger, and Alchemist Artificer.
Looking at the team more mechanically, we have a dedicated Frontline, dedicated Backline. Sorta-both midrange (warlock) and the utility.
Now, I have narrowed down the domains I am sort of interested in to: Life, Light, Tempest, and Forge. But I can't decide what would be fun to play, and useful for the team.
Life Cleric: Water Genasi. Pros, CoS is considered a 'deadly' campaign, and this would give us a greater chance at finishing. Cons, Too little team damage? Between artificer and life cleric I worry that we wouldn't be able to get things done. Also, RPing, I have put almost no thought into the personality/backstory of this character besides healbot.
Light Cleric: Wood Elf. Pros, backline blasting, lots of spell casting. Cons, not enough frontline on the team?
Tempest Cleric: Hill Dwarf. Pros, awesome in every way. Cons, I have played this character in the past, and am wanting to kind of try something new.
Forge Cleric: Mountain Dwarf. Pros, incredibly useful to a team outside of standard utility, great RP flavor as well. Cons, a little overpowered? Our DM is a first time DM and I don't want to ruin things for him by destroying his encounters.
