Finally used bike share. Anyone else using it?

Finally got a chance to use bike share! I rarely have the need since I usually bike, but ended up driving to work after taking my wife to the airport, and needed a bike for a couple lunch time errands.

Decent experience, considering there was a bit of a learning curve. The app is easy and clean. Demand for bikes isn't high, so there isn't much need to reserve a bike. Head to the rack and punch in your info. My main gripe from the whole experience is that the screen was a little unresponsive and low contrast, surprising considering how new the bikes should be. Took me a couple of tries before I figured out the right speed and pressure to apply to the keys to get it to register everything. No biggie once I figured it out. Interestingly, while it was in no hurry to register my keystrokes, it logged me in and verified my payment info pretty quickly.

The bikes are pretty nice. Crazy heavy, but nice fenders, chain guard, and internal hub. No grease on my khakis (not that I'd know anyway--all my khakis have bike grease that won't come out). The gearing is unnecessarily low for how flat the city is, but has a good range. Pretty pleasant ride overall.

I was dropping by the State Parks office to get an annual pass, so I put my bike on "hold" (locked, but meaning no one else can rent it). Since there aren't any bike share racks at that building, I could lock it up anywhere. It's a smart and fairly easy feature, but a bit annoying because the bike's lock is a very specific height, doesn't leave much extra space, and requires you stick it in the bike at a specific angle. That makes it tough considering how many crappy racks there are in this town. It was pretty tricky to find a place to lock it. I suppose there's nothing keeping you from "locking" it outside a secure rack (the bike just knows whether the lock is inserted, not what it's attached to), except fear that someone would make off with it and they'd try to hold you accountable since you didn't obey the orders to lock it to a real rack. Oh well.

Dropped by a post office box, bought a pass from an exceedingly slow line, and paid only $1.33. Would definitely use it again. I chatted with a few folks who obviously hadn't seen them in action, so I guess the interest is there. Hope the pilot is successful and they continue to roll out more bikes.
