Can someone teach me some of the finer points of EU4

I am a newbie to the game and there seems to be a lot of things that the tutorials leave out, like how to manage the variety of your units in your army, or how colonies break off after a certain point, I was just wondering if someone could explain these thing and others like them to me in a way that an idiot could understand.
